UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
