Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase future success.

After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
