The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
