The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old
Global audiences mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff gained fame for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit earned him a vast and loyal fanbase.
In addition to his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff is one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
