Vince Zampella, the mind behind the wildly popular first-person shooter Call of Duty, has passed away in a traffic collision in California aged 55.

Zampella's death was announced by Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, the video game company which he helped establish.

The renowned industry figure lost his life when his car crashed and caught fire on a freeway in LA on this past Sunday, according to.

"This is a heartbreaking loss, and we stand with Vince's family, his family, and all those touched by his work," a representative from Electronic Arts commented.
