TGA's Future Class Program Seems to Be Finished
Apart from recognizing video games in different award categories, The Game Awards in the past showcased a Future Class. People recognized within the Future Class group were designed to reflect the “bright, bold, and inclusive future” of gaming, much like how other annual lists highlight prominent figures. However, the Future Class designation is coming to an end, according to event organizers.
More Than Simply Recognition: The Role of the Program
This initiative was not just a nod to prominent figures in the gaming industry. It also served as a hub for career networking and career development. Although a number of participants voiced appreciation for being part of Future Class, some felt that it was insufficient for those involved. Complaints targeted several areas of Future Class, including the insufficient support to be present at the event to providing no compensation for mentoring new inductees.
Past Issues and Initiative Hiatus
The program was put on hold in 2024, when The Game Awards did not include the recognition in its programming. This absence followed a 2023 controversy where a number of Future Class participants endorsed a letter calling on the ceremony to employ its stage to voice support for an international issue.
"You gave us the role of ambassadors of a better future — accordingly, our obligation towards you and all the gamers world-wide compels us to voice our views," the statement stated.
The letter further contended that the games community often disregarded specific communities, and challenged developers in the space to improve.
Formal Announcement and Online Updates
Though this is the second year that TGA has not nominated a Future Class, event organizers had not formally declared its cancellation before. The absence has been remarked upon, in part, due to the seeming removal of any trace of Future Class on the official Game Awards website. The show creator and producer did not immediately respond to a media inquiry.
Next year’s Game Awards are planned for Dec. 11.
