Meteorologists are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be low, so warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this indicated the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
