After all these years RB know they will never be considered as legitimate by large sections of German football fans, so have taken the decision to archly lean into the unpopular character; a similar advertising campaign was employed in Munich ahead of their season opener there, joking of "eventually an uncomplicated traditional kit" being in town after some Bayern fans' complaints about the champions' latest kit.

The fact both clubs are competing for the similar objectives only adds to the tension, despite it is not the motivation behind it. Bayern's early season fettle has further emphasized this feeling, and seeing Luis Díaz outshine even Harry Kane this weekend, with the German's improved performances making light of the ongoing unavailability of their creative midfielder, this weekend has been an illustration of the true picture of each team's standing.

As their shot-stopper indicated, the trip to Bayern after the national team pause will provide many answers.

Broader Perspective

If Dortmund or the visitors are title material is a different question. Post multiple campaigns of internal and external instability, maybe BVB could do with a season of steady performance, of managing development of continuous enhancement; the final objective also relevant for Leipzig.

For teams and clubs that view themselves as polar opposites, they used this matchday providing an excellent demonstration of facing similar challenges.
