Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
