A Grim History and a New Escalation
The United States possesses a dark record of meddling, military incursions, and control in Latin America, but the recent overnight operation marked its premier large-scale offensive on the continent of South America. “American dominance in the western hemisphere will never be questioned again,” Mr Trump declared.
The choice to militarily strike another sovereign country and seize its president – mere days after he publicly sought an off-ramp – possesses far-reaching consequences. This ought to concern everyone.
Deep Instability for a Nation in Crisis
Venezuelans have suffered under an oppressive, corrupt, and inept government under Mr Maduro, largely considered to have stolen the last election. They now face a future of deep insecurity. Mr Trump has indicated that Maduro's second-in-command, Delcy Rodríguez would follow US instructions, and dismissed rightwing opposition leader and Nobel prize-winner María Corina Machado as a plausible replacement.
However, Ms Rodríguez, now the acting leader, has so far sounded notes of defiance – and other factions of the decapitated regime are considerably more radical.

A man who came to office vowing to end foreign wars now says he is “unconcerned about deploying troops”. Redesignating the Department of Defense as the Department of War was more than posturing. But this illegal attack came absent any United Nations mandate or authorization from lawmakers; the opposition party was kept in the dark and say they were given false information in briefings. Mr Trump aims not merely to stretch international norms, but to destroy them.

While the raid allegedly resulted in the deaths of 40 Venezuelans, including civilians, there were no American fatalities. Mr Trump’s increasing belief in his impunity will surely embolden further adventurism.
The Thin Pretext and True Motives
No one buys the excuse that this is about drugs. Venezuela is only a minor conduit for cocaine; Mr Trump recently pardoned the past Honduran leader Juan Orlando Hernández for narcotics and arms offenses. Mr Trump himself has stated plainly that he is propelled by the allure of petroleum resources as well as personal bravado, the ideology of some in his administration, and the desire for glory as his support at home declines.
Tepid International Response and Waning Global Governance
The worldwide reception, especially in Europe, has – with honourable exceptions – been shockingly muted. That’s not because of Mr Maduro’s sins, but anxiety over Mr Trump’s wrath. The strong reaction from UN Secretary General António Guterres was commendable, but this episode underscores the UN's diminishing clout.
Mr Trump’s anti-interventionist domestic base could yet press him to redirect his gaze inward – but rising medical costs, public anxiety over the economy and ongoing controversies make foreign conflicts more appealing.
It has been less than 12 months into his presidential term. World leaders may live to repent if they fail to speak up today, with the question of which nation is next looming.
