British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
