Britain Ready to Use Seized Russian Funds to Fund Ukraine's Military Campaign
The British government is ready to advance with utilizing the entire amount of frozen Russian funds to support the Ukrainian war effort, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced.
In a shared declaration, the heads of state of the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany stated that this coordinated action would heighten pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and urge Moscow to participate in talks.
They added that the decision would be executed in strong partnership with the US.
United Kingdom restrictions have frozen in excess of £25bn of Russia's assets since Russia launched its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. But, until now, money allocated to the Ukrainian government using Russia's assets had only been sourced from earnings and returns earned on them.
Sir Keir informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the United Kingdom, the French Republic, and Germany were united in their desire to drive progress toward using the complete amount of the seized Moscow's national funds to conclude the conflict.
He stated that further restrictions soon would heighten the tension on the Russian government.
This announcement comes after European representatives met in Copenhagen previously to consider utilizing immobilized Russian funds for a €140bn loan to the Ukrainian nation.
Last month, President Donald Trump encouraged G7 allies to seize or employ immobilized Russia's holdings, as reported by news outlets.
The value of seized Russia's holdings in the EU is estimated to be nearly €211bn.
President Zelensky encourages UK's Sir Keir Starmer to participate in the Purl initiative
Moscow launched extensive missile and drone strikes throughout Ukraine on Friday, leading to blackouts in significant regions of Kyiv, the city, and eight other regions.
Two people were fatally injured and no fewer than 20 people were hurt in the attack, authorities in Ukraine said.
In a post on an online platform after the strike, Zelensky commented that the strategic strike focused on public and utility structures.
"What's needed is not mere statements but decisive action - from the United States, Europe, and the G7 - in providing air defence systems and implementing sanctions," he wrote.
"All penalty impositions undermines Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky noted, in a different message.
Additionally that day, Zelensky stated to media outlets he would encourage Sir Keir to enter the Purl scheme, under which alliance members purchase arms from the US to give to Ukraine.
While praising the United Kingdom's firm backing for the Ukrainian government, he remarked it should demonstrate clearly that it would engage in the program, as well as apply further sanctions on Russia.
